Published : 19 May 2026

The COLOCAL Project of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development at Independent University, Bangladesh (ICCCAD-IUB) organized a workshop titled “From Thesis to Publications: A Workshop on Academic and Non-Academic Writing Pathways” on May 17, 2026. The workshop was conducted under COLOCAL’s continuing education and training activities to support participants in converting research into academic publications and public communication outputs.

The first session was conducted by Dr. Matthew Cashmore, Professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, on academic writing and publishing. The first part of the session covered conversion of thesis-based research into journal articles, identification of research contributions, article structure, journal selection, publication formats, types of academic publications, and open access publishing.

The second part of Dr. Cashmore’s session focused on peer review and the publication process. He addressed editorial assessment, reviewer feedback, and reasons for manuscript rejection including the use of artificial intelligence in academic publishing.

The second session was conducted by Md. Ohidujjaman, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Global Studies and Governance at IUB, on non-academic writing. The session covered public communication writing and how editors assess submissions like op-eds and blogs. He also gave tips on headline construction, audience-focused language, use of evidence, and ethical considerations in communicating research findings.

Earlier, the event opened with remarks by Fahmid Mohtasin, Research Officer of the COLOCAL Project, who introduced the project and outlined the objectives of the workshop. Dr. K A. Rabbani, Dean of IUB’s School of Environment and Life Sciences, delivered the closing remarks.
