Students of Physical Sciences visit Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute in Cox’s Bazar
Published : 03 May 2026
A team of students and faculties from the Department of Physical Sciences of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) went on study tour to the Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI) in Cox’s Bazar on April 30–May 1, 2026. The tour provided students with practical exposure to oceanographic research, marine science, and applications of scientific data.
The IUB team included 30 students, who are majoring in Mathematics and Physics, and several faculty and supervisors from the department. They were received by Dr. Muhammad Shahinur Rahman, Scientific Officer and Head of the Department of Physical and Space Oceanography at BORI, and Ms. Tania Islam, Scientific Officer and Head of the Oceanographic Data Center.
The sessions, conducted by BORI officials, covered physical oceanography, space oceanography, climate change, marine pollution, coastal monitoring, and applications of mathematics and physics in marine research.
Students were introduced to the use of mathematical modeling, computational methods, numerical analysis, and data processing in the study of ocean circulation, tidal patterns, sea-level change, and climate-related changes in the Bay of Bengal.
The IUB delegation also visited the Oceanographic Data Center at BORI and learned about datasets and research resources related to coastal dynamics, marine environmental monitoring, remote sensing, climate studies, and numerical modeling.
Discussions were held regarding possible collaboration between IUB and BORI in areas including student internships, research training, laboratory access, undergraduate research, and joint academic activities.
BORI, established in 2015 under the Ministry of Science and Technology, is Bangladesh’s national research institute dedicated to oceanographic and maritime research. The study tour was organized as part of the department’s academic activities to connect classroom instruction with scientific research and institutional practice.
