Department of Environmental Science and Management welcomes new faculty members

Three new faculty members have recently joined the Department of Environmental Science and Management (DESM) at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). Their areas of specialization include climate change and social transformation; urban and regional planning, climate change, and development with a strong applied sustainability focus; and microbial biotechnology, environmental and industrial microbiology, antibiotic resistance, and environmental science and management.
Ms. Ummay Habiba, who has recently joined the Department of Environmental Science and Management (DESM) as a Lecturer, completed her M.Phil. in Sociology and Human Geography, specializing in Climate Change and Social Transformation, from the University of Oslo, Norway. She earned both her MSc and BSc in Geography and Environment from the University of Dhaka. Prior to joining IUB, she served as a Lecturer and Senior Research Associate at the Center for Sustainable Development, ULAB, and worked as a seminar tutor at the University of Oslo from 2022 to 2024. She is a recipient of the UiO–PRIO M.A. Fellowship and has completed the Transformational Leadership for Sustainability program at cChange, Oslo.
Mr. Ragib Mahmood Shuvo has also recently joined DESM as Lecturer. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Urban and Regional Planning from the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), and an additional graduate degree in Climate Change and Development from IUB. He has published five Q1 journal articles, along with several conference papers and book chapters. In addition to teaching and research, he brings experience from multidisciplinary environmental projects involving project coordination, environmental assessments, and planning-focused studies. His work emphasizes connecting research with practice and engaging students in real-world environmental and sustainability issues.
Ms. Lipa Mondal, another recent Lecturer recruit of DESM, completed her MSc in Botany with a specialization in Microbial Biotechnology and her BSc (Honors) in Botany from the University of Dhaka. Her research interests include environmental and industrial microbiology, antibiotic resistance, and environmental science and management. She has hands-on research experience at the Centre for Advanced Research in Sciences (CARS), University of Dhaka, with technical skills in PCR, DNA isolation, cytotoxicity assays, antibiotic sensitivity testing, and bioremediation. She is a recipient of the National Science and Technology Fellowship.
