Published : 25 October 2025

The Department of Economics organized the 8th Economics Lecture Series titled “The Role of Central Banks in the Economy” on October 23, 2025, at the DMK Lecture Gallery, IUB. The event was supported by the Independent Economic Society (IES).

Dr. Md. Azad Uddin, Additional Director of Bangladesh Bank, delivered the keynote presentation where he discussed the history of money and finance, including the barter system and its evolution; the two-sector economy model and its theoretical applications; the financial system of Bangladesh; and the tools and implementation of monetary policy. His presentation also covered economic policy classifications, methods of assessing economic health, open market operations, discount rate policies, and green and sustainable financing.

In his opening remarks, Dean of IUB’s School of Business and Entrepreneurship (SBE) Prof. Dr. Raisul Awal Mahmood highlighted the crucial role of central banks in maintaining economic stability and guiding monetary policy in Bangladesh’s evolving financial landscape. He emphasized how the Bangladesh Bank’s policies directly influence inflation control, currency stability, and long-term economic growth.

A question-and-answer session followed, where faculty members and students actively participated in discussions on economic models, monetary tools, and policy implementation.

Guest of Honor Prof. Dr. Daniel W. Lund, Pro-Vice Chancellor of IUB, said, “This event has been an important opportunity for students to gain insight into the role of central banks. Many people around the world are unaware of the history and role of central banks and how they differ from commercial banks. Hearing directly from Dr. Azad Uddin, who works at the Central Bank, helps us better understand and appreciate the bank's important role in Bangladesh."

The session was hosted by Zaiinab Samara Quader of the Department of Economics and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Md. Khaled Saifullah, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Economics.

Prof. Dr. Shahriar Kabir; Dr. N. N. Tarun Chakravorty, Assistant Professor; Md. Kamrul Islam, Lecturer; Shamil M. Al-Islam, Lecturer; faculty members, staff, and students from the Department of Economics also attended the event.
