Mr. S M Al-Husainy, Founder Trustee of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), passed away on May 28, 2025. Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun. He was 94 years old. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the National Heart Foundation Hospital & Research Institute, Mirpur, Dhaka.

Born in 1930, Mr. Al-Husainy served as Chairman of IUB’s former Governing Council and later as a member of the Board of Trustees. As a key member of the Education, Science, Technology and Cultural Development Trust (ESTCDT), he played an instrumental role in the establishment of IUB. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Chittagong Independent University (CIU).

In his distinguished career in public service, Mr. Al-Husainy served as Secretary to the Government in several ministries, as a Member of the Planning Commission, and as Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission.

He held leadership roles in numerous national organizations, including Chairman of Micro Industries Development Assistance and Services (MIDAS), Chairman of Swanirvar Bangladesh, and Director of Micro Industries Finance Ltd. He was Chairman of the Bangladesh Chapter of the Society for International Development (SID), Vice President of the National Heart Foundation, and a Member of the Executive Committee of Dhaka Ahsania Mission.

Mr. Al-Husainy was also a Fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and a former President of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), where he served for three years.

The IUB community – including members of the Board of Trustees, ESTCDT, faculty, administration, students, and alumni – expresses deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prays for the salvation of his departed soul.
