Mohammad Moin Uddin, a first-year student of Computer Science and Engineering at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), has finished among the top performers in the National Round of the Eco Olympiad 2025, held earlier this year across the country.
The Eco Olympiad 2025 is a national-level competition designed to engage students in environmental science and sustainability issues. Organized by non-governmental organization GrowUp Bangladesh, the Olympiad aims to promote environmental awareness and analytical thinking among university students across the country. This year, over one thousand university students from eight divisions participated in the divisional round.
After advancing as a Divisional Round Winner from an MCQ-based preliminary stage, Moin secured a score of 74.25 out of 100 in the national round, which tested participants through both multiple-choice and written assessments on climate change, pollution, biodiversity, and policy frameworks.
“I saw this Olympiad as a space where I could connect my tech background with my environmental values,” he said. “I’ve been advocating green practices since school – avoiding plastic, conserving energy, and raising awareness in my circles. Now that I’m in university, I wanted to scale up that effort.”
The written part of the National Round, which Moin found most challenging, asked participants to assess real-world environmental problems and propose viable, localized solutions. “It wasn’t just academic – it was about thinking structurally, about how to solve these crises at a policy or community level,” he said.
To prepare, Moin studied the UN Sustainable Development Goals, reviewed case studies on renewable energy and climate adaptation, and followed environmental news and scientific blogs. “I used videos, articles, and online resources to self-train – to think in a disciplined manner. My score wasn’t just a number – it was proof that students in tech can meaningfully contribute to sustainability,” he added.
Moin brings prior experience from national competitions, including the Bangladesh Biology Olympiad 2022 and the International Olympiad on Empowerment and Leadership 2023. These earlier platforms helped him build confidence under pressure and navigate complex subject matter beyond his core discipline.
The Eco Olympiad was judged by environmental scientists, educators, and policymakers, with scoring criteria based on factual accuracy, depth of analysis, clarity of argument, and relevance to sustainability challenges in Bangladesh. Moin received a medal and a certificate for his impressive performance in the competition.
