Dr. Imran Firdaus's article featured in Limited Edition Blu-ray of The Isle

Published : 08 January 2025

An article by Dr. Imran Firdaus, Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), has been featured in the limited edition Blu-ray release of Kim Ki-duk's 2000 film, The Isle. Released on October 10, 2024, this special edition Blu-ray is distributed by Umbrella Entertainment, an independent Australian enterprise known for local and international films.

The article, titled “Egon Schiele in The Isle and Kim Ki-duk's Screenwriting,” examines the impact of Austrian Expressionist painter Egon Schiele on the film’s striking visual style and unconventional narrative structure. Dr. Firdaus analyzes how Schiele's artistic vision informs Kim Ki-duk's approach to crafting a story that explores isolation, obsession, and the complexities of human relationships.

Kim Ki-duk's The Isle tells the story of Hyun-Shik (Kim Yu-seok), a solitary man who rents a cabin on a remote lake. His life becomes entangled with Hee-Jin (Suh Jung), an enigmatic woman who supplies the fishermen. Their connection spirals into a tense exploration of hidden desires and dangerous obsessions, framed by the stark beauty of the natural setting.

Dr. Firdaus said, “Kim Ki-duk draws inspiration from Egon Schiele's art, but he doesn't simply copy it. He uses Schiele's work as a springboard to explore his own unique vision, one that delves into the complexities of human nature within the context of modern Korean society. Ki-duk, like Schiele, confronts uncomfortable truths and challenges viewers to see the world with a new perspective, even if it’s unsettling. Writing for this project felt like diving into The Isle itself: enigmatic, surreal, and unforgettable.”

He also credited Dr. Jack Sargeant, a noted writer, scholar, and curator, for the opportunity to contribute to this project. The article underscores Kim Ki-duk's reputation in Asian Extreme Cinema, a genre known for graphic violence, and highlights his distinctive screenwriting, which elevates the visceral experience of his films.
