
Dept. of Social Sciences and Humanities welcomes new faculty members

The Department of Social Sciences and Humanities (DSSH) of IUB has welcomed seven new highly-qualified full-time and adjunct faculty members to its roster who bring in a wealth of experience and research background in the fields of class structure, urban shifts, social changes, postcolonialism, feminism, feminist anthropology, human rights discourses, medical anthropology, ethnography, migration, refugee issues, community media, gender, applied social research, policy research, and war violence.
Among the new members is Professor A I Mahbub Uddin, PhD, a renowned Social Scientist in Bangladesh, joining IUB as an adjunct faculty. With an impressive career as an Honorary professor of Sociology at the University of Dhaka and holding a PhD from York University, Toronto, Canada, Professor Uddin brings a wealth of knowledge on class structure, urban shifts, and social changes in Bangladesh. His active engagement through research, writing, and media presence on contemporary issues enriches the intellectual landscape of IUB.
Joining alongside Professor Uddin is Professor Sarder Aminul Islam, another prominent figure in the field of Social Sciences. As an Honorary Professor of Sociology at the University of Dhaka, Professor Islam has a prolific portfolio of research work, articles, and books published by renowned national and international publishers. His active participation in research and discourse on contemporary issues promises to foster a vibrant academic environment at IUB.
Naznin Akter Banu, PhD (Nom de Plume: Nazneen Shifa), takes up the position of Assistant Professor, bringing a critical postcolonial feminist perspective to the department. Her academic journey at the Center for Women’s Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), India, and her focus on feminist anthropology and human rights discourses add a unique dimension to the department's expertise.
Md. Ilias Kamal Risat, with a PhD in Medical Anthropology from the joint collaboration of the University of Sussex and University of Brighton, United Kingdom, joins as Assistant Professor. His research on cultural nuances surrounding death and end-of-life care in Bangladesh from a postcolonial perspective, coupled with a post-doctoral fellowship investigating caring networks among patients in Rwanda, enhances the department's research diversity.
Md. Reza Habib, PhD, also joins as Assistant Professor, with a research focus on migration, refugee issues, community media, and gender. His work on the assimilation and integration of Rohingyas in Bangladesh, conducted at the Doctoral School of Sociology, HSE University, Moscow, Russia, adds significant value to the department’s academic offerings.
Nazia Mahmood, PhD, appointed as Senior Lecturer, brings expertise in Medical Anthropology from the University of Dhaka. Her work on ethno-medicine among the Manipuris of Bangladesh and her dual talents as a photographer and filmmaker offer a multifaceted approach to anthropology and social sciences.
Shejuti Nure Maksurat, joining as a Lecturer, has an extensive background in Applied Social Research, Policy Research, and War Violence. Her education from Bangor University and University of Hull, UK and her experience with NGO’s and INGO’s research wings, provide valuable insights into wartime gendered violence, migration, and refugees.
