Seminar on Groundwater Hydrology at IUB
The Department of Environmental Science and Management of IUB hosted a seminar titled “Ground Water Hydrology of Bangladesh: Importance of Research and Monitoring for the Sustainable Development of Groundwater Resources” on November 17, 2022. The speaker at the event was Anwar Zahid, Ph.D., Director, Ground Water Hydrology, Bangladesh Water Development Board. He is also an adjunct faculty at the Departments of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience and Soil, Water and Environment at the University of Dhaka.
In his deliberation, Dr. Zahid highlighted the work of Bangladesh Water Development Board in collecting information on groundwater hydrology which, till date, is the most comprehensive first hand data on groundwater in the country. The data they have collected could be useful for researchers, industrialists, farmers, and households in planning and managing water resources on their land. He also talked about saltwater intrusion, depleting groundwater levels, salinity driven migration and loss of crops.
Dr. K.A. Rabbani, Head of the Department of Environmental Science and Management, IUB, delivered the welcome speech. Dr. Hafizur Rahman, from the Department of Environmental Science and Management, delivered the vote of thanks.
